What is the best way to decide which type of drive to buy?
Each format has its strengths, and no single format is best for everything. The choice between the DVD formats depends upon your needs. 1. Decide what you want to use the DVD for. While DVD-R and +R are good for storing video and archiving; DVD-RW, +RW and DVD-RAM are good for editing video, work-in-progress or any application that requires adding or updating the data because they let you reuse the discs again and again. If your needs include backup of vital data, DVD-RAM may be best because it has built-in defect management and error-correction technologies. It also provides more rewrites than any other format. If you need to write as fast as possible, the new 16x DVD-R or DVD+R discs are a better choice. If you just want to re-write as fast as possible, the 4-8x DVD+RW will save you a substantial amount of time If you want extra capacity, it's best to select a Double Layer drive. Double layer discs will hold 8.5GB of data as opposed to the standard DVD which holds 4.7GB. 2. Decide where your DVD will be viewed. If you plan to share the DVD, use DVD-R or DVD+R.
